Human and Civil Rights
The rights and privileges our society gives or withholds from its members reflect how those members are valued within society. We affirm the common humanity, the equal worth and integrity, of all people regardless of ethnicity, race, gender, class, ability, sexual orientation, religious conviction or tradition, or any other characteristic, which may be used to divide and to discriminate. Consequently, we reject all social practices and structures that discriminate, and all social attitudes that involve prejudice against any individual or group.
We will seek to address such practices and attitudes wherever they are to be found, especially in the areas of health care, abortion, marriage equality and immigration, and the prejudices of gender, heterosexism and racism.

| Health Care |
Health care was the first issue that CCCJ addressed. During 2006, CCCJ sponsored a series of public workshops to explore the problems in healthcare and to listen to the concerns of the community. As a result of these gatherings CCCJ lobbied for AB840, a bill in the Californian legislature which would have created a ‘one-payer’ health system for all Californians. This bill was vetoed by the Governor.
In 2007 CCCJ is joining with other faith organizations around the state to advocate for universal health provision. The principles of such reform need to include:
Guaranteed affordable quality health care for all Californians
Containment of health care costs
That employers and government join with workers in sharing the responsibility and risk
Ensuring patient choice and protecting the doctor-patient relationship
Improved quality of care
As part of public education, and to raise awareness not only of the issues but also of possible solutions, CCCJ has helped organize events in the One Care Now 365 cities in 365 days campaign. |
